Historical Influences

1. I believe the individual who had the most influence on Darwin was Alfred Russel Wallace

2. Alfred Russel Wallace is considered one of the most influential and important intellectuals of the 18th century. He not only published the theory of evolution with Darwin he also made numerous other contributions to many other areas such as biology, anthropology, epidemiology, and astrobiology. More information on Alfred Russel Wallace can be found here: http://wallacefund.info/.

3. Alfred Russel Wallace contributions touched on many of the topics under the 'How does evolution work' subject of this assignment. He wrote papers both theorizing that species not only descended from other species but also that new species were formed due to environmental factors. He followed up his theory with another paper directly to Darwin suggesting that evolution is driven by competition and natural selection.

4. Darwin had already started to develop his theory of evolution by the time Wallace reached out to him. It was the research from Wallace that pushed Darwin into publishing his theories and together with Wallace, produced a more complete theory. I do believe that Darwin needed that push in order to act, if it wasn't for Wallace giving him a nudge Darwin may have been left in the dust so to speak.

5. Darwin was heavily affected by the attitude of the church for a long time. He knew what he was proposing was extremely controversial and he felt that he did not have enough data to support his theory. Adding to the complications was his wife who held strong religious beliefs. Darwin and his wife held beliefs that were polar opposites of each other, where Darwin believed in evolution his wife believed in what is now referred to as creationism.

  1. Hello!
I enjoyed reading your initial responses. You helped me gain a greater understanding of how Alfred Russel Wallace influenced Darwin's Theory of evolution. I agree with you that Darwin was heavily affected by the beliefs and attitude of the church. His proposal was one of the most controversial pieces in that era. Religion seems to divide so many individuals.

Such as? The prompt asks you to identify them. Now, it's true that since Wallace developed the same theory as Darwin that we should expect that ALL of the bullet points apply equally to both Darwin and Wallace, but that at least should have been indicated here if that was your message here.

Very good in your next section. I agree with your conclusions there.

Good last section, though I would back a bit on the issue of "not having enough data". Darwin had mountains of data. What he lacked was courage to publish in the face of likely opposition, which is what this prompt was about.
